Senior Class Dilemma

The Senior Class Officers are a pivotal part of any successful senior year. Not only do they organize and plan the events and activities held during the school year, but they also plan fundraisers to raise money to help make senior year everything it can.  This year’s senior officers include, President Gayathri Kosigi, Vice President Kat Betancourt, Secretary Julissa Duarte, Treasurer Avery Evans-Brooks, and Historian Emma Jessen.

With numerous uncertainties about the upcoming school year, many are left wondering how will this year play out? While no one can really say for certain at the current time, the officers have provided answers to some questions to hopefully provide some insight into this year.

What kind of plans do you have in store for this year?

Gayathri Kosigi: “ We have a lot of fun things planned for this year such as trying to host a movie night on the football field! We are just really excited to make the most out of what we can with our best and last year.”

Kat Betancourt: “As far as celebrations, we are unsure what we can do next semester as of right now. We are working to make the best out of our senior year, we just ask that the senior class be a little more patient with us this year, there are a lot of uncertainties at the moment, but we are doing all that we can to make sure we have an amazing senior year!”

How do you think COVID will affect the year?

Julissa Duarte: “Senior year will definitely look a little different and we may not get to do the things we were looking forward to, but regardless, we are going to graduate. I think each individual’s attitude toward this year will impact their own experience so it’ll look different for everyone. We can still have fun and make memories just with masks on and six feet apart.”

What are your goals for this year?

Emma Jessen: “We hope to have our senior festivities, we want to give the seniors all the activities you would expect to have during their senior year, that includes prom, senior field day, the whole thing! We also realize there are some events we cannot provide due to COVID restrictions, so we’re trying to create new activities such as a movie night on the field so that our seniors aren’t missing out on anything this year.”

Kat Betancourt: “My goals this year as an officer is simply to be a voice for my senior class, our year is faced with a lot of adversity and I think being a voice and an ear for my class is one of my highest priorities right now.”

What are your plans for raising funds this year?

Gayathri Kosigi: “We want to ask different restaurants like Chipotle, Chick Fil A, and Texadelphia to hold spirit nights for us, since everyone likes those places.”

What piece of advice would you give to the seniors this year?

Gayathri Kosigi: “I think everyone should really enjoy these times and make as many memories as possible so we don’t live to regret anything. The older we get, the more responsibilities we take on, so it’s important to use this time to enjoy it with friends and family and have fun while also trying to keep the senioritis away.”

While nothing has been confirmed yet with how this year will play out, the Senior Officers have clearly shown they are working tirelessly to make sure the Class of 2021 will have a senior year to remember.
